Little Train of the Upper Somme

Back to map

WW1 Railway Line

Enjoy a ride along the banks of the River Somme along a railway line that was constructed in 1916 for the needs of the Battle of the Somme. The Little Train of the Upper Somme will take you through the beautiful scenery of the Somme Valley and up onto the Santerre Plateau on a return journey from Froissy to Dompierre, along a railway line that was used to supply the trenches. Railway enthusiasts will really enjoy the tunnel, bridge, chicane, passage through the forest, the jolting around and may be the odd bit of soot! The railway line was maintained after the war to supply the sugar factory at Dompierre.
This return journey from Froissy to Dompierre takes half an hour and is a great way to learn about WW1 history in a different manner!

The Narrow-gauge Railway Museum

The museum is the largest of its type in the whole world! It has a fascinating display of 37 locomotives and some 100 wagons, including French, German and American steam trains, diesel shunters and various military or industrial wagons, mostly dating from the 1910s to the 1920s. The history of the narrow-gauge railway is told from 1880 to modern times. Many of these locomotives were used to supply the trenches during the Great War.
