Would you like to open a buisness at the Maison Potié, Thiepval?

maison potié
Would you like to invest in a new business in the Somme? Owner of the Maison Potié, the Somme Departmental Council, is looking for someone to open a new remembrance tourism-linked enterprise in this beautiful home at Thiepval. Applications must be submitted before 10 May 2018.

A beautiful house located at the heart to the remembrance trail

The Maison Potié is located at the entrance to the grounds of the Thiepval Memorial, along a path walked by 200,000 visitors each year.
The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing was unveiled in 1932. Upon its 16 pillars are inscribed the names of more than 72,000 men of the British and South African forces who have no known grave. Each year on 1st July, a poigant ceremony is held at the memorial in remembrance of the men who fought during the Battle of the Somme.
In 2004, a visitor centre opened close to the memorial, which was renovated in 2016 to include a museum. Both are managed by the Historial, Museum of the Great War in Péronne. The centre and museum provide information about the battles of the Somme, the Missing and First World War aviation, while also providing visitors with an area to research their ancestors, a book and souvenir shop and light refreshments.

A tourism project adapted to the commemorative nature of the site

In 2015, the Somme Departmental Council purchased the Maison Potié with the aim of opening a new tourism-linked business within it. This project must be in complement to the existing offer and respect the special commemorative nature of the site. Projects including tea rooms, school rooms, tourist information centre with the sale of local produce, accommodation or bike hire are all possible ideas, but candidates are also free to imagine any other similar project in their application during the Appeal for the Expression of Interest (Appel à Manifestation d’Intérêts) that has been launched by the Somme Departmental Council.
The two-storey house, with basement and conservatory, has a total surface area of 266 m² (floor area of 187 m²). It was built in the 1920s and the property also includes lawns and a wooded area. The future business must make full use of the whole property.
To be received, the projects must be managed by private bodies, represented by private individuals or legal persons.
The projects will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

  • pertinence, feasibility and appropriateness of the project
  • quality of the future offer provided
  • annual opening periods
  • financial sustainability (no grant will be provided for the everyday running of the project)

Depending on the development project selected, the Somme Deprtmental Council will carry out part of the necessary renovations. Negotiations will then be held with the project manager in order to determine how much work remains at his/her expense and the financial conditions and duration of the resulting contract (5 to 15 years).
